A European record of the Nearctic species Nephrotoma saturalis wulpiana (Bergroth, 1888) (Dipter: Tipulidae) in Portugal
The circumstances of finding a second North American species of cranefly, Nephrotoma saturalis (Loew, 1863), in the Iberian Peninsula are given. The specimens are of the subspecies wulpiana (Bergroth, 1888), whose known distribution is in western North America.Hancock, E Geoffrey ; Kramer, J ; Lyszkowski, Richard M

Malmgrenia McIntosh, 1874 (Annelida, Polychaeta, POLYNOIDAE): proposed conservation of usage by designation of Malmgrenia andreapolis McIntosh, 1874 as the type species
The purpose of this application, under Article 81.1 of the Code, is to conserve the current usage of the widely used name Malmgrenia McIntosh, 1874 (a polynoid worm genus from the northern North Atlantic) by designation of Malmgrenia andreapolis McIntosh, 1874 as the type species of Malmgrenia. The type species...Muir, A I ; Chambers, Susan

Synthesis and reactions of 4-aryloxyflavans
4α-Aryloxyflavans unsubstituted in ring A have been synthesised by the reaction of phenols with flavan-4β-ols in the presence of boron trifluoride in ether. If reaction times are prolonged beyond disappearance of the starting 4β-ols, thermodynamic control leads to 4-arylflavans and the yields of 4-aryloxyflavans are negligible. 4-Arylflavans are the sole...Bateman, G ; Brown, B R ; Campbell, J B ; Cotton, C A ; Johnson, P …

Investigation of inherent degradation in cellulose nitrate museum artefacts
Cellulose nitrate was one of the first semi-synthetic plastics to be commercially exploited and as such many museums contain a large number of artefacts illustrating the versatility of this plastic for the creation of a wide variety of functional and aesthetic artefacts. Conservators find themselves faced with the challenge of...Quye, Anita ; Littlejohn, D ; Petherick, R ; Stewart, R

Distribution of Idanthyrsus cretus(Polychaeta:Sabellariidae) in the Tropical Eastern Pacific and application of PCR-RAPD for population analysis.
Sabellariid polychaetes, commonly known as honeycomb worms, are capable of forming large reef-like aggregations. One species, Idanthyrsus cretus, has recently been found in several localities during surveys of Las Perlas Archipelago, Pacific Panama. Large reefs of this species have not been recorded elsewhere in the Tropical Eastern Pacific. The reef...Barrios, L M ; Chambers, Susan ; Ismail, N. ; Guzman, H M ; Mair, J M

Edward Forbes (1815-1854) and the exhibition of natural order in Edinburgh
The roles, affordances and social agency of natural history museums are discussed in relation to the writings of Edward Forbes. These signal a motivation, in the mid-nineteenth-century, to naturalize the established social order through the systematic arrangement and display of natural history specimens. The perceived importance of the embodied messages...Swinney, Geoffrey N

First host record for the rogadine genus Pholichora van Achterberg (Hymenoptera:Braconidae) with description of a new species and notes on convergent wing venation features
The wasp genus Pholichora is recorded as parasitic on geometrid moth larvae on the basis of a new species, P. subscleroma sp. nov., from South Africa (Natal), reared from Ascotis reciprocaria (Lepidoptera: Geometridae, Ennominae). The discovery of this new species necessitates a reassessment of the characters separating Pholichora from Hemigyroneuron....Quicke, D L J ; Shaw, Mark R

The biology, egg and larvae of Acaenitus dubitator (Panzer) (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae: Acaenitinae)
Acaenitus dubitator (Panzer) is found to be a koinobiont endoparasitoid of the larva of an endophytic beetle, Cleonis piger (Scopoli) (Curculionidae), in Britain, suggesting a similar mode of development for the ichneumonid subfamily Acaenitinae as a whole. The parasitoid can overwinter in its cocoon in one of two ways. Individuals...Shaw, Mark R ; Wahl, D B
