Abstract
This article aims to promote the study of skills and practices through the examination of historic machine tools. Machine tools in museum collections offer an ideal resource for the investigation of historic practices and their material cultures. National Museums Scotland holds a unique collection of historic machine tools and examples in this article will be based on lathes made by John Lang in Renfrewshire and their extensive documentation in the Glasgow Business Archives.
