Abstract
A sculpture of the Virgin and Child excavated in Paris in 1999 is probably a discarded first version of the trumeau figures from the portal of the lost Lady Chapel of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. It is evidence that this vanished group, here dated to 1245-47, represented a key development in Gothic sculpture.
