Abstract
With around 23,000 objects representing the cultures of China, Japan and Korea, the National Museum of Scotland houses the largest collection of East Asian material in the United Kingdom outside London. In February 2019, a new gallery named ‘Exploring East Asia’ will open to showcase works from this collection. Exploring shared aspects, such as faiths, philosophies, technology, materials and motifs, as well as highlighting the traditions distinct to each culture, the gallery seeks to demonstrate the continuing vitality of artistic production in the three cultures alongside the historical material.
