Abstract
From about 1850 the Renaissance Revival inspired the design of both architecture and the decorative arts in Britain, prompting Minton & Co. to bring the arts of the period to the Staffordshire potteries. The lecture will focus on a subgroup of revivalist ware inspired by Italian Renaissance maiolica through the work of one of Minton’s pottery painters, Thomas Kirkby (1824–90). Kirkby and the Minton factory created vases, jardinières and dishes which reimagined the Renaissance.
