Abstract
Join Doctor Anna Groundwater, Principal Curator of Renaissance and Early Modern history at National Museums Scotland, to hear about what the Mary, Queen of Scots Casket reveals about the Scottish Queen’s fascinating and multifaceted life. When we think of Mary, all too often we think of her dressed in black and of her tragic ending. However, the silver-gilt casket now on display at Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum tells of a different Mary: the young Renaissance princess dressed in vibrant pink, the Queen of Scots, and briefly, Queen of France too. At the same time, though, the casket was instrumental at a pivotal moment in Mary’s downfall, following its discovery with what were alleged to be incriminating letters. This talk explores what the casket says about both sides of Mary’s life, Magnificent Mary, as much as the tragic Mary, and how we can tell those stories in a museum.
