The Peebles Hoard: A Late Bronze Age discovery from the Scottish Borders

Abstract

In June 2020, a metal detectorist found several peculiar bronze fittings near Peebles in the Scottish Borders. Subsequent excavation by the Treasure Trove Unit and National Museums Scotland revealed these to be part of a substantial Late Bronze Age hoard comprising unique bronze fittings and equipment with surviving organic material, as well as a complete sword still in its scabbard. This talk will present the ongoing research into the hoard and place what we know about the hoard (so far) in its wider context. Emily Freeman is Manager of the Treasure Trove Unit, based at National Musuems Scotland. She is responsible for the running of the Treasure Trove Unit and provides administrative support to the Scottish Archaeological Finds Allocation Panel. Her research interests include the use of Roman coinage in Scotland and the impact of the Treasure Trove system on museum collections. Dr Matthew Knight is Senior Curator of Prehistory at National Museums Scotland responsible for the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age collections. He is particularly fascinated by how and why prehistoric communities buried material culture, particularly metalwork, with a focus on north-western Europe. In 2022, he published a book on the topic entitled Fragments of the Bronze Age.
