Abstract
It is ten years since the Silverdale Hoard, one of the largest Viking-age hoards ever found in England, was discovered in a field in Lancashire. To celebrate its display at the JORVIK Viking Centre throughout 2022, the Richard Hall Symposium this year focuses on hoards: their concealment, their rediscovery, and their interpretation. What makes a hoard, and what sorts of evidence do they provide for the societies that assemble and deposit them? Bringing together invited speakers from across the UK, the Isle of Man and Ireland, , the symposium will consider in particular how questions of identity in the Viking world might be addressed with reference to hoards, and how recent discoveries have shifted our understanding.
