Abstract
Callander Heritage Society are delighted to announce that Bethany Simpson, the Assistant Curator of Prehistoric and Roman Archaeology at National Museums Scotland will speak to us on 22 April 2026 on 'The Gods of the Roman Frontier'. Doors open 7pm, talk at 7:30 at the Masonic Hall, Craigard Road, FK17 8DN
Bethany completed her Master's Degree in Archaeology at Durham University and spent 5 years working for the National Trust before taking up her post at National Museums Scotland. The focus of her work is on the culture of the northernmost frontier of Roman Britain. The Roman Army brought huge changes to the landscapes of Scotland. Forts and new settlements were stamped across the frontier. The people of these communities brought new gods, rituals and ways of worship from across the Roman world. The frontier could be a frightening place and soldiers, civilians and local communities called on their gods to bring good fortune.
