Abstract
This traces the history of the development of the National Museum of Scotland (NMoS) from its dual beginnings, as the collection of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (which became the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland) on the one hand, and as the Industrial Museum of Scotland on the other. It explores the differing degrees to which, and ways in which, a sense in Scottish national identity lay behind the development of the NMoS, and the extent to which a national identity is expressed, explicitly or implicitly, in its displays.
