Abstract

PA Clancey was born in Glasgow 1917 and moved to South Africa in 1950, where he was Director of the Durban Museum 1952–1982 and died 2001. He described his first bird taxon aged 20 and went on to describe 328 African and 33 European taxa. Our research of his collection of 5.5K European bird skins at National Museums Scotland reveals Clancey’s active collecting during the 2nd World War, when part of the British 8th Army in the Italian campaign. In total, we recovered 1,168 skins, including four types, from Italy and Austria 1943–1945.
