Abstract
‘Dorothy Dunnett was a notably visual writer. The plots unfold against a rich backdrop of the built landscape and interiors, populated by a wealth of vividly portrayed objects. From household goods, to more elite works of art and virtu, such objects enliven and authenticate her stories, enhanced by Dunnett’s extensive knowledge of fifteenth and sixteenth century Europe. More than this, the materiality of these objects suggests something of the nature of the characters that interact with them, that hold, lose and give them; and the characteristics of the times in which these narratives are set.
‘Although Scotland only features from time to time in the adventures of Niccolಠand Lymond, its cultural life and decorative contexts were very much connected into the Renaissance world of continental Europe, in which these figures moved with such ease. My paper will paint a picture of that world in Scotland, through the objects and interiors which inhabited it, and within which Dunnett’s creations performed.’
