Abstract
The Education team offer a popular Cold War learning package that includes taught tours, workshops and learning resources. This is one of the ways in which the museum has chosen to narrow its focus on Cold War history. There is a dedicated school space containing a range of tactile Cold War objects that are used as an introduction and discussion points to begin the lesson. The separate civil aviation exhibition is about the history of Norway’s civil aviation industry and related civilian flight stories. It takes an interactive and immersive approach to display, using digital media and design to create an engaging space. Aircraft are also positioned on the ground and hung in attitudes from the ceiling. Towards the end of the exhibition the narrative also reflects on the act of collecting objects and presenting them in a museum. The Cold War is not a theme in this exhibition, however, it does provide a tangential context to some of the displays, for example, the expansion of tourism and the proliferation of low-cost airlines in the western market economy. At the time of research, there was also a display of the Norseman’s wings and floats on show, while the aircraft undergoes intensive restoration. This object was discovered by a lake in Finnmarksvidda. It was wrecked during a secret intelligence sortie into the Soviet Union from the Kola peninsula in 1952.
