Abstract
For almost 400 years, Scotland lay on the edge of the Roman empire, sometimes inside and sometimes outside. Too often we see this story from the Roman perspective, as the inevitable march of empire and the clash of swords. But the narrative is complex and two-sided. Using the latest archaeological discoveries and insights, this talk will look afresh at the soldiers and people who accompanied them north, as well as the varying and unexpected impacts these encounters had on local groups. Beginning in south-west Scotland, Fraser Hunter will look across the country and beyond to set these pivotal events in context. From Galloway to the Grampians, Scotland’s history was transformed by these turbulent centuries.
