Abstract
There are few archaeologists working in Britain today who have directed major excavations in as many corners of the island than Prof Martin Carver. His latest volume is the result of a different kind of dig: an excavation of the literature on early medieval archaeology in Britain, notes gathered from a lifetime on its frontlines.
