Abstract
Manuscript papers and photographic prints in the National Museums Scotland Special Collections
and Archive. The Ward archive was purchased by the Museum from a family descendant in 2006.
The papers were first transcribed and arranged by Stephen Quirke (University College London) in
2006. Further transcriptions were made, and details of existing works were revised and expanded by
Daniel Potter (National Museums Scotland) in 2022-24, with added biographical and contextual
details.
Funding for cataloguing, conservation and digitization of the archive provided as part of the AHRC
fellowship "Buying Power: The Business of British Archaeology and the Antiquities Market in Egypt
and Sudan 1880– 1939" 2022– 2024 [AH/W005328/1]. The conservation was conducted by Anna
Trist, photography was conducted by Neil McLean, Amy Campbell and Olga Tjukova.
Written text throughout the archive is transcribed as close to the original layout as possible, and
replicates original spellings, errors and other features. Errata are not marked as [sic] as a matter of
course.
