Abstract
The Road to Mons Graupius, blending travel diary with biography of ancient historical literature, records a journey from the Scottish Borders to the edge of the Highlands. Travelling on foot, by car and by bicycle, Alan Montgomery, acclaimed author of Walking the Antonine Wall, follows former Roman roads stopping along the way at Roman military sites on the most likely route of the Agricolan invasion of Caledonia in the first century AD, led by renowned general Gnaeus Julius Agricola, which culminated in a confrontation with the indigenous tribes next to a hill called Mons Graupius.
As well as featuring the author's encounters with some of Scotland's most intriguing ancient monuments, he also examines the account of the invasion written by the Roman author Tacitus, a unique text that has fascinated and frustrated Scots through the ages and inspired a fanatical hunt for the elusive site of Scotland's first recorded battle.
