Abstract
Culturally and economically important upland gamebird species endemic to the British Isles, widely distributed in heather-dominated moorland areas. Previously considered a subspecies of the willow ptarmigan, it now has full species status (AviList Core Team, 2025). Phenotypically similar birds occur in Ireland but are considered a separate taxon (L. s. hibernica).
