Abstract

In 2023, stained glass window making was added to the Red List of Endangered Crafts by the UK Heritage Crafts Association. This decree stated that the production of traditional stained-glass work on all scales is at threat in the UK, specifically the design and making of traditional stained glass windows for large-scale architectural contexts. To draw some critical light on this decree, Dr Jasmine Allen, director and curator, Stained Glass Museum, Ely; Dr Jessamy Kelly, lecturer in glass, Edinburgh College of Art; Sarah Rothwell, senior curator, modern & contemporary design, National Museums Scotland; and Sax Shaw, stained glass artist and director of Finnigan & Shaw Ltd., will discuss and contextualize the British historic and contemporary stained glass sector, and what the future looks like for this beautiful craft in the UK.
