Abstract
When it comes to the historiography of Roman frontiers, we are used to a particular narrative. Dominated to a certain extent by the military, men, western scholars and certain universities, it has led to various presumptions and preconceptions.
For those of us working on northern frontiers, we need to recognise inherent biases in our discipline, whether around scholarship, geography, gender and the impact of global politics of the time. Through the lens of the Limes Congress (international Congress of Roman Frontier Studies), now 75 years old, we can chart some of these developments and their impacts on the study of the Roman military.
