Abstract
In a letter dated 4 October 1773, Bishop Robert Forbes wrote to one of his habitual correspondents, the English nonjuring bishop, Robert Gordon, that his wife Rachel had ‘dream’d a Dream’.¹ Explaining ‘I do not much heed Dreams, yet I chuse not to disregard them altogether’ (9: 1995), Forbes recounted the particulars of Rachel’s dream, in which one man called Nicholas Brett, another of Forbes’s correspondents, had sent Forbes ‘in a Present a number of fine Pocket-Pistols, & a great Coat bedeck’d with white Cockades’ (9: 1995).
