Representing Migration in Museums: Case Studies from Scotland and across Europe. Report of a National Museums Scotland symposium in collaboration with the University of St Andrews, December 2021
How do objects tell stories of the movement of people in the 21st century? What do we collect and how? What should we collect and why? This document summarises the presentations and discussions that took place during an online event ‘Representing Migration in Museums’, held by National Museums Scotland, in partnership with Dr Emma Bond, University of St Andrews, in December 2021. This online symposium explored the representation of modern migration in museums. Speakers from museums in Scotland and across Europe discussed good practice in collecting and displaying objects that represent the movement of people and experiences of migrants in the 21st century. Topics included the relationship between contemporary collecting and community engagement, collections and displays linking historic migration to contemporary stories, and the collecting of both physical and digital objects
