Abstract
Dr Godfrey Evans is the Principal Curator of European Decorative Arts in the National Museums of Scotland in Edinburgh. During his four decades there, he has been responsible for installing many new galleries and mounting major summer temporary exhibitions on a range of subjects, including two on the Empress Catherine the Great and Nicholas and Alexander, the last Tsar and Tsarina of Russia. Dr Evans is generally acknowledged as the principal authority on Hamilton Palace, Scotland’s largest and grandest private residence. He wrote his Edinburgh University PhD on Alexander, 10th Duke of Hamilton, as a patron and collector, and recently published a two-volume, 18-chapter book on Hamilton Palace, the Dukes of Hamilton and their collections, which has been widely acclaimed. Over the years, Dr Evans has also acquired over twenty outstanding items that were formerly in Scotland’s greatest collection for the National Museums. These include the exquisite travelling service of Napoleon’s favourite sister, Princess Pauline Borghese, and the extraordinary Hamilton-Rothschild Tazza, which the 10th Duke of Hamilton created by marrying a very large Byzantine sardonyx bowl to the beautiful, enamelled gold foot from a monstrance that had been made for King Philip II of Spain and the royal chapel of the Escorial Palace. These and many other truly exceptional works will be included in his very well illustrated talk.
