Abstract
For decades many people in museums have been advocating for free and open access to collections online, including open access to published research papers based on our collections. 20 years ago, museums were debating the loss of control that comes with allowing people to share data and images of their collections online. Are we in the same position now, or does AI’s use of our digital assets mean a loss of public trust and reputation, loss of income, and the impossibility of correcting misuse/misinformation? Can copyright law or other IPR tools help museums navigate this new technology?
This workshop will discuss what steps museums can take to mitigate the risks of use of collections by AI and whether copyright or other IPR tools might be a solution.
