Abstract
Prompted to chose one item from the Edinburgh University Special Collections and use it to reflect on histories of/with material culture, I started with a Suffragette belt to consider the material culture of women’s political action. Examining the design and construction of the belt, supported by other sources, we built up a picture of the circumstances in which it might have been used, and the meanings of the decoration in the context of a larger Suffragette material landscape as revealed through objects in the museum’s collection. Moving from 20th century women’s suffrage to 18th century Jacobite material culture, we then considered some similarities in the making and use of objects with political significance by women across Scottish history.
