Abstract
Hoards evoke stories and generate questions: Why do people collect things, both now and in the past? How do ordinary things become treasured objects? And why do we find these discoveries so fascinating? Hoards help us imagine particular events – the moment of burial, the moment of discovery – but what stories can they tell us beyond that? From assembling and burying, to curating and displaying, our panel will give diverse perspectives on this fascinating phenomenon. They will place the practice of hoarding into a historical context and explain how we use these objects to understand the past.
