Abstract

The York Bunker, a mile from the centre of York, is an English Heritage managed visitor attraction. This semi-sunken concrete structure is situated in a residential cul-de-sac and was the No. 20 Group Headquarters of the Royal Observer Corps (ROC) from 1961 to 1991. The purpose of the bunker was to gather information on the location, size and radiation levels in the aftermath of a nuclear attack to help inform the Government on how to respond effectively.
