Abstract
When we think of Mary Stuart, all too often we think of her dressed in black and of her tragic ending. However, the silver-gilt casket now on display at Kirkcudbright Galleries tells of a different Mary: the young Renaissance princess dressed in vibrant pink, the Queen of Scots, and briefly, Queen of France too. At the same time, though, the casket was instrumental at a pivotal moment in Mary’s downfall, following its discovery with what were alleged to be incriminating letters. This talk explores what the casket says about both sides of Mary’s life, Magnificent Mary, as much as the tragic Mary, and how we can tell those stories in a museum. Dr Anna Groundwater is the Principal Curator, Renaissance and Early Modern History, Social History and Archaeology, National Museums Scotland.
