Abstract
This training event is funded by the SGSAH Discipline Catalyst – Cultural and Museum Studies. The training is aimed at first year postgraduate research students in Scottish universities planning to incorporate ethnographic research methods into their work, but with no background in anthropology.
Ethnographic research methods emphasise close-up participation in others' social worlds. They are a hallmark of research in the Social Sciences, but they have been utilised and even re-shaped by Arts and Humanities disciplines. Traditional ethnographic techniques of participant observation, fieldnotes and interviewing can be considered anew through collaborative and creative practice, and encounters with archival, historic and material resources. In this two-part workshop, we will introduce you to some of the key challenges and opportunities for undertaking ethnographic research. We will offer you the opportunity to discuss your projects with academics and practitioners from an arts and humanities perspective. We will also carry out some collective practical work on ethnographic observation, interviews and fieldnotes.
