Abstract
Forty years after the start of excavations in the Glebe Field at Whithorn, there is still more to be discovered. Dr Adrià¡n Maldonado has produced a new illustrated guide to the early medieval archaeology of Whithorn, incorporating the latest findings from the Whithorn Cold Case project.
Revisiting the archives and using new scientific techniques, we are now able to look again at the story of Whithorn's origins from before the monastery to the establishment of the medieval cathedral.
The talk will focus on one small area of the excavation that captures the remarkable sweep of historical events. It evidences a powerful gathering place of the fifth century, the establishment of one of Britain's earliest monasteries, a possible Viking attack and its aftermath, and the foundation of one of Scotland's earliest town centres.
