Abstract
On the reverse of a late 16th-century locket, known as the Fettercairn Jewel, the god Mercury strides across a finely enamelled architectural landscape populated with fauna and flora. The enigmatic jewel was the inspiration for the book Decoding the Jewels: Renaissance Jewellery in Scotland, published recently following the locket's acquisition in 2017 by National Museums Scotland [for a note on this, see Helen Wyld in JHT 32 - Ed.]. In this article I will briefly set out some of the research questions that faced the contributors to the volume - and some potential answers.
